Our way of sharing worldwide events! You will find far more listed at the WA7BNM Contest Calendar.
Challenges
Challenges are another form of fun where as a HAM logs contacts across the world, they may be eligible for special recognition under several themes. Often times awards are focused on the number of contacts a HAM has logged or the locations of where those contacts are based. RAC has quite a few different challenge awards, the full list of them available here.
Parks on The Air (POTA)
If you are a HAM and you enjoy the idea of bringing your radio outside, Parks on The Air (POTA) is likely a very good match for you. The fundamental purpose for POTA is to encourage portable amateur radio operations and promote emergency-style deployment from “parks” of all types. Some of the locations that can be activated include
- Nature preserves
- National / provincial / municipal parks
- Historic sites
In the Fredericton area alone there are more than 25 locations to activate! Look for ones in your area on the POTA Map.
Summits on The Air (SOTA)
You can probably see a theme with the _OTA’s by now! Summits on The Air is an award scheme for HAMs encouraging operators to activate mountain peaks (or hilltops, whichever is available) using portable equipment.
This award scheme and administration was started and is maintained by a group in the United Kingdom.
World Amateur Radio Day
This annual event takes place on April 18th of every year to celebrate the formation of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) which occurred on April 18th 1925.
There are different themes each year but the premise remains the same: celebrate amateur radio by getting on the air and making contacts. If you so happen to work some of the RAC official stations, you will be able to enter your callsign and download a certificate of participation.
More information on this event can be found here.
